Tommo from London, UK, most likely an SEO guy had a question on how to generate ranking reports. Here was his specific question:

What is the best way to check your own site for keyword rankings, e.g if I wanted to target a new phrase and wanted to check the progress of its ranking – whats is the best way to check it? Should I just search Google and scroll through the results?

The Answer…

In any business, being popular helps if you are popular for the right reasons. Generally anything positive about yourself can help boost your business, or your credibility in your own field of study that can help you in your current employment, or getting a new job. But unfortunately, after the You & A portion of Matt Cutts at SMX Advanced, looks like the opposite was coming out If you are a popular SEO.

Michael Gray and Rae Hoffman have been talking about Google being unfair in profiling SEOs, where links are devaluated simply because they are the works of SEO people even if the intent was purely clean and done in a whitehat method. But if they were not by SEO people, no devaluation is received even if the methods look going against Google Webmaster Guidelines. Rand Fishkin sums it all up with some tips on going SEO stealth mode and flying below the radar.

I have always thought getting popular in this industry was advantageous and has tried my simple humble ways to get there and hopefully rubbed elbows with the industries top SEOs. And now this makes me want to think again… I’ll rewind my myself and reset my thinking back to 1999… *rewinding…ok reset done* What was I talking about? SEO? Actually, I don’t know about SEO. What is SEO? I’m a Web Designer/Developer and I do not care about SEO. I’ll leave that to the SEO people.

So you think you have a Google-killer idea? A search engine of all search engines? An invention so revolutionary that Google might buy your work? Stop and take a look around the US Patent and Trademark Office website.

Every new unique work done by a careful individual will always have his work patented by his country’s patent office. A patent by definition is a set of exclusive rights granted by a state to a patentee for a fixed period of time in exchange for a disclosure of an invention (check Wikipedia for more details).

The US Patent and Trademark Office website showcases a complete list of all patent protected inventions from individual and businesses, as well as trademarks and intellectual property. Checking from their site I have noticed that Google has already made several patents on their past and recent works, some I have no idea what they’re for. Some of these patents are: Generating hyperlinks and anchor text in HTML and non-HTML documents, Method for searching media, Systems and methods for translating chinese pinyin to chinese characters and so much more. These patents give us an idea what Google is currently up to and we can expect something soon based on their recent patents.

All of Google’s new work is always patented to insure no one will steal their idea and they can sue those people who will deliberately copy their technology. Of course when Google made Google Maps it didn’t stop Microsoft to have their own version of Web Mapping Service Application. This is because every patent documentation is done in detail and in this way other companies having the same idea can still have their work patented as long as its not the same with the other patented works.

Next time before you claim you have invented something new, check all the similar patented work listed in USPTO to avoid any complaints from the companies and individuals who had it patented. Do you have a clever idea which you want to be protected?

Google Maps now has a wider coverage for Asian and Latin American countries. It only used to have vector map data in some countries like the United States, Europe and other countries which have a centralized mapping system. For some countries like the Philippines, map users rely heavily on the information contributed and shared by individuals on keyhole.com or pagenation.com.

Here is a map of Manila, Philippines.

Here is also a map of Aparri.

And even down to Jolo

The two maps above can now show you major roads. Though these maps are not yet as detailed as the Google Map for the United States where it will really give you driving directions, I am still impressed with the development. I can say that this is indeed a good start and I appreciate the effort that Google is making to provide the users a more effective and efficient map. What will it be like when someday all the roads in the Philippines will be fully mapped by Google? Will it be the end of getting lost in the middle of nowhere?
